East Coast Relief Fund School Preparedness Programme
Description
We travelled to Tumpat, Kelantan, on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia to join students and teachers of SK Seri Kampung Laut undergoing their first disaster preparedness training by Mercy Malaysia. The school was among dozens inundated in December 2014 when Malaysia suffered its worst floods in over 4 decades years.
On the Saturday morning, more than 40 students and teachers discussed the causes and effects of climate change which contributed to the disaster. Participants were also taught how to put together a “Grab Bag” or three-day survival pack.
SK Seri Kampung Laut is one of 30 schools across Malaysia identified for training under Mercy Malaysia’s School Preparedness Programme funded by donations raised during AirAsia Foundation’s East Coast Relief Fund campaign. Upon completion, the programme is expected to equip 60 teachers and 1,200 students to conduct further peer-to-peer sharing.
