Folkcharm Travels connects travellers with rural craft communities in Thailand through immersive cultural tourism experiences. Developed by the sustainable fashion social enterprise Folkcharm, the initiative supports artisan livelihoods while promoting appreciation for traditional crafts and sustainable lifestyles.

  • Partnerships with rural weaving communities across multiple provinces in Thailand
  • Sustainable income opportunities created for artisan communities producing traditional textiles
  • Development of community-based tourism experiences in Loei Province
  • Promotion of traditional craft skills such as weaving, basketry, and natural dyeing

Fast fashion and changing consumer habits are threatening the survival of traditional craft communities.

The rapid global expansion of the fast fashion industry has created intense competition for traditional crafts businesses. Mass-produced products, changing cultural preferences, and declining demand for handmade goods have made it increasingly difficult for rural artisans to sustain their livelihoods.

As incomes from traditional crafts fall, younger generations often leave their villages to seek stable work in urban areas. Without a new generation to carry forward these skills, many rural craft traditions risk disappearing within the next few decades.

Folkcharm blends sustainable fashion and community-based tourism to revitalise rural craft traditions in Thailand.

The Bangkok-based social enterprise began by collaborating with weaving communities in rural villages to create contemporary fashion using organic and natural materials. Through partnerships with the VolksKrafts Artisans’ Hub, Folkcharm brings these handmade textiles to urban consumers through pop-up markets across Bangkok while promoting sustainable fashion.

Building on this success, the organisation expanded its network to include communities in several provinces across Thailand, combining traditional craft techniques with modern design aesthetics. As demand for Folkcharm’s products grew, the enterprise began exploring ways to deepen engagement between consumers and artisan communities.

Through Folkcharm Travels, visitors are invited to experience rural craft cultures firsthand by spending time in village communities, learning traditional skills, and gaining insight into the stories behind handmade products.

AirAsia Foundation’s grant supports the development of community-based tourism experiences with artisan villages in Loei Province.

  • Develop seasonal, customisable travel programmes for visitors
  • Provide opportunities for travellers to stay in traditional village accommodation
  • Organise cultural activities such as cotton weaving, basketry, natural dye workshops, and crop harvesting
  • Introduce visitors to home-cooked North-Eastern Thai cuisine prepared by local families

These immersive travel experiences allow villagers to generate income through community-based tourism while encouraging travellers to appreciate traditional crafts and sustainable lifestyles.
