5 GBV survivors

HopeBox is a women-led social enterprise in Vietnam supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) through safe accommodation, trauma-sensitive training, and employment. Its mission is to break the cycle of abuse by enabling survivors to achieve financial independence and long-term wellbeing.

  • Production capacity of bakery and pastries targeted to double within one year
  • Deliver professional baking and pastry skills training
  • Sustainable employment pathways created through business expansion and partnerships
  • Provides safe accommodation and trauma-sensitive support

Gender-based violence continues to limit women’s safety, wellbeing and economic participation in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, 63% of women have experienced violence in their lifetime, yet 90% do not report it. GBV remains a major threat to women’s physical and psychological health, education and employment, particularly in rural areas where work is often insecure and low-paying.

Survivors face significant barriers to reintegration, including lack of safe housing, limited access to employability and insufficient trauma-sensitive support. Many existing programmes are not equipped to address psychological needs such as PTSD and anxiety, making long-term employment difficult to sustain.

HopeBox provides a holistic transition model that combines safe accommodation, skills training and employment pathways for GBV survivors.

Women undergo a structured six-month programme that equips them with both practical skills and emotional resilience. Upon completion, they are connected to employment opportunities through HopeBox’s business model or its partners within the F&B industry.

To sustain this support, HopeBox initially operated a seasonal gift-box business but identified the need for a more stable, year-round revenue stream. It has since partnered with Café Giảng, a Hanoi café known for its egg coffee, to supply pastries and baked goods. With each outlet serving approximately 1,000 customers daily and expansion plans underway, this partnership presents strong potential to scale both production and impact.

Looking ahead, HopeBox aims to establish a dedicated pastry studio, expand café partnerships across Hanoi and build a sustainable business model rooted in Vietnam’s vibrant café culture, enabling the enterprise to grow its reach and support more GBV survivors.

AirAsia Foundation’s grant supports HopeBox’s expansion into a professional pastry production and training studio.

  • Equipment upgrade including commercial oven, mixers, and bakng tools to increase production capacity
  • Hands-on training in baking, product design and quality control with professional chefs
  • Marketing and branding to strengthen brand visibility and sales

These efforts will enable HopeBox to scale production and cafe partnerships, create stable jobs, and strengthen HopeBox’s long-term sustainability.

HopeBox

Established in 2018, HopeBox is the first social enterprise in Vietnam to offer integrated psychological and economic recovery services for Gender-based Violence women survivors. They provide a 6 months programme where participants receive comprehensive personal development support, including counselling, compassionate communication workshops, and emotional intelligence training. This model empowers women to achieve financial independence, raise their children in safe environments, and break the intergenerational cycle of violence.

Huong Dang

Huong Dang grew up in a rural farming family and worked from a young age to support her education. Her journey changed when she joined KOTO, a social enterprise providing hospitality training for disadvantaged youth.

After witnessing her sister's situation and connecting the struggles faced by women in her village, she founded HopeBox to provide survivors with a safe pathway to independence and a chance to rebuild their lives.
