Focus Area

Opendream blends gaming, technology, and social impact to reshape how people explore cities across ASEAN. Through The Small World, a mobile augmented reality game, travelers can discover local heritage sites, social enterprises, and responsible tourism experiences—making every journey both meaningful and fun.

  • Developed The Small World, a gamified AR travel app for responsible tourism
  • Maps social enterprises, heritage landmarks, and local experiences across ASEAN cities
  • Promotes awareness on wildlife conservation and sustainable travel practices
  • Uses in-game purchases to fund environmental and community initiatives

Across Asean cities, heritage sites and social enterprises are overlooked while mass tourism fuels overconsumption and environmental damage.

In many Asean cities, popular attractions draw millions of visitors—often at the expense of lesser-known cultural landmarks, local livelihoods, and fragile natural resources. Over-marketing and overcrowding lead to pollution, gentrification, and unsustainable consumption patterns.

Meanwhile, responsible travel options and community-based experiences exist but remain under-promoted and hard to find. The missing link was a central platform that could make sustainable tourism both visible and engaging.

Opendream created The Small World, a gamified augmented reality app that turns sustainable travel into an interactive adventure.

Players explore real-world cities through their phones, discovering social enterprises, heritage sites, and community-based experiences mapped within the game. By completing challenges, walking heritage trails, and learning about local culture, users are rewarded for traveling responsibly.

The app’s unique design bridges entertainment with education—its storylines and game principles teach players about wildlife conservation, ecological sustainability, and cultural preservation. Through in-app purchases such as boosts and accessories, gamers also directly contribute to environmental programmes and social causes, turning play into purpose.

With The Small World, Opendream proves that digital creativity can inspire real-world impact—changing the way people travel and connect with local communities.

AirAsia Foundation’s grant supported the development of The Small World, Opendream’s mobile augmented reality app that promotes responsible tourism across Asean.

Through this support, Opendream was able to:

  • Develop a scalable, gamified travel platform that highlights social enterprises, heritage trails, and local tourism experiences
  • Integrate augmented reality and storytelling to make responsible travel fun and educational
  • Promote awareness of wildlife conservation and sustainable practices among travelers through gameplay

The grant helped transform The Small World from a concept into a functional platform, connecting digital exploration with real-world impact and inspiring travelers to choose sustainability with every journey.
