A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing more than 9,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.

On 25 April 2015, a powerful earthquake hit Nepal with its epicentre in the remote Gorkha District. The disaster triggered avalanches on Mount Everest and caused widespread destruction across the country. A second major earthquake struck on 12 May, compounding the devastation. With more than 23,000 people injured and entire communities displaced, international relief efforts were urgently mobilised.

AirAsia launched a two-phase campaign delivering emergency aid and rebuilding schools for affected communities.

The first phase focused on immediate humanitarian assistance. AirAsia sponsored flights and cargo shipments for emergency relief organisations travelling from ASEAN countries to Kathmandu, enabling critical aid to reach survivors quickly.

In the second phase, AirAsia Foundation launched a regional fundraising effort through donation boxes on flights departing from Malaysia and Thailand, alongside an online fundraising platform. The funds raised supported the rebuilding of four primary schools in heavily affected areas, restoring access to education for local children.

In December 2017, a team of ten AirAsia Allstars visited Olang to celebrate the opening of the rebuilt school and hosted the first joint Sports Day for students from all four schools, marking an important milestone in the community’s recovery.
