Overview
Sapanapro Red Dao Therapy & Spa is a community-led social enterprise in Sapa, Vietnam that transforms traditional Red Dao herbal knowledge into sustainable tourism and wellness services. By commercialising herbal therapies and products, the initiative creates income opportunities for ethnic minority households while promoting responsible harvesting of forest resources.
Impact At A Glance
- 72 Red Dao households participating as shareholders and herbal suppliers
- Annual revenue growth of approximately 20 percent since 2007
- Development of community-based herbal therapy spa services in Ta Phin village
- Promotion of sustainable harvesting of traditional medicinal plants
The Challenge
Ethnic minority communities in northern Vietnam often struggle to benefit from the region’s growing tourism economy.
The mountainous region of northern Vietnam, particularly the hill station of Sapa, attracts visitors drawn to its cool climate and rich cultural diversity. Although ethnic minorities represent more than 95 percent of the population in the area, many own few businesses or stable sources of income due to limited education and language barriers.
As a result, around 40 percent of households remain in poverty and depend heavily on a single annual rice harvest for survival. To supplement their income, some families resort to unsustainable harvesting of forest products that are sold to intermediaries. This threatens both the local environment and the long-term sustainability of traditional practices among ethnic communities such as the Red Dao.
The Solution
Sapanapro enables Red Dao communities to transform traditional herbal knowledge into sustainable tourism and wellness products.
Established to support the Red Dao people of Ta Phin village, Sapanapro works with community members to cultivate and process medicinal herbs used in traditional Red Dao therapies. By commercialising herbal remedies and spa treatments, the enterprise allows the community to generate income while maintaining control over their cultural heritage.
The organisation produces certified herbal therapy products and offers traditional herbal bath experiences to visitors travelling to the region. Through these services, tourists can experience authentic Red Dao wellness traditions while learning about the cultural and environmental significance of medicinal plants.
By creating a structured market for herbal therapies, Sapanapro encourages sustainable harvesting practices and helps ensure that traditional knowledge remains an asset for the community rather than a resource that is exploited unsustainably.
